  • FROM THE 2010 CHURCH BOOKLET
    HISTORY BEEBE CHAPEL CME CHURCH
    Compiled By James H. Smallwood

Around 1867 former slaves and freedmen, inspired by Joseph A. Beebe, founded the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church presently known as Beebe Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The church was located on the east side of Highway 17, North of Washington, NC. opposite of where Cherry Run African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was previously located.
In 1871 Charles Hardy, Agustus Bonner, Peter Smaw, Burton Blount, and Stephen West, Trustees of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, were deeded the track of land adjoining the property of R. W. Whorton and A. Gorham in Beaufort County, North Carolina." On this tract of land, known as "Backwoods,” the founding members built a church and named it Beebe Chapel Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in honor of Joseph A. Beebe who helped organize the church and served as the church's first pastor. Beside the church, a cemetery was established where more than one hundred bodies rest today.
The church’s strong faith and dedicated leadership contributed to the community’s growth. The community and church bonded, and "Backwoods," with Beebe Chapel Colored Methodist Episcopal Church as its pillar, became a niche for the Black community.
As the Beebe Chapel Church family matured and grew strong, so did the community. Along with the church; Peyton School, a Lodge, and Jack Franklin's Store served the community. Not only did the church grow spiritually, its membership grew as the church baptized and married members of the community. Many families walked to Beebe Chapel to worship and praise God. “And when all those folks in Backwoods got together at Beebe Chapel,” as The Mrs. Catherine Moore says, "there was a time going on in Beebe Chapel Church.”
For more than eighty-one years, Beebe Chapel thrived in “Backwoods.” The members praised the Lord and worked unselfishly as the church grew. As it continued to grow, the church in “Backwoods” became too small, so the members built a new church at its present site on 239 Cherry Run Road and dedicated it on March 1, 1952.
Through the years, God blessed Beebe Chapel with some great ministers. Rev. Joseph Beebe, Rev. John Warren, Rev. Rogers, Rev. Griffin, Rev. White, Rev. Durden, Rev. Bethel, Rev. Raymond Williams, Rev. Isaac, Rev. Reddick, Rev. McCullah, Rev. Markham, Rev. Boozer, Rev. Robert Smith, Rev. Dale Sneed, and Rev. Johnny Morris were faithful shepherds. Pastor Joneice Carroll is presently the shepherd attending the flock at Beebe Chapel.
Beebe Chapel has 142 years of continuous service to God and the community. The church has experienced some mighty times, as well as, some challenging times. It split in the early seventies, but true faith, commitment, sacrifice, and devotion of members and friends kept Beebe Chapel solid and anchored.
Beebe Chapel is the loving church by the side of the road serving the community and friends. It was yesterday. It is today. It will be tomorrow, for its living legacy is “Lest God builds the church, it is built in vain.”
"MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS Beebe Chapel’s NOBLE CAUSE.".
